In Memory Of:

Jack Babcock 1934-2025

Jack first discovered Manzanillo in the 1980s, and by the early 1990s he and his wife, Janice, made frequent visits to Manzanillo and eventually made it their winter home. Over the decades, he became a familiar and beloved presence at the Beach Club and throughout Sierra Madre. Jack embraced Mexican culture, enjoyed the vibrant social life he and Janice built, and treasured time spent with friends. An avid golfer, he cherished countless days on the course and the camaraderie of his fellow golfers.

Giving back to the community he loved was central to Jack’s life. He often said he never wanted to be “only a taker,” and he lived that principle fully—devoting his time, energy, and resources to organizations and projects that uplifted the people of Manzanillo.  Guided by an enduring optimism, a belief in the power of service and a deep faith in others, Jack worked tirelessly to improve the lives of those around him. Those who knew him will remember his generosity, kindness, and compassion he shared so freely.

Jack’s presence in Manzanillo will be deeply missed, but his spirit and legacy live on in the community he deeply loved.

Hal Ebbels 1948-2023

Sierra Madre lost a longtime winter resident, Hall Ebbels on February 26, 2023 at the age of 75. Hal and his wife Donna own Condo F2. The Ebbels family has a long history here at Sierra Madre, starting with Hal's parents from Saskatchewan first purchasing their condo in the mid/late70's. Hal's brothers, Bill (and Sheila), and brothers JIm and Jack both purchased condo's here as well.

Manzanillo, Club Santiago and Sierra Madre were Hal's favorite places and he and Donna spent most winter's here for the past 10 years. Hal was a jovial host, fierce cribbage competitor, a rabid Flames fan, an excellent golf and tennis player and a tremendous father and grandpa who loved to entertain his kids at the pool.

He shall be greatly missed by the entire ZLO and Sierra Madre Community.

Lore151 sm.jpg

Hannelore Raza 1929-2021

Lore was a long time owner of E2 and winter resident. Lore passed away suddenly on May 11 in Montreal, Quebec.

We shall dearly miss Lore’s joyful and engaging company around Sierra Madre.  She was truly a kind and warm-hearted woman, ever ready to engage with her beautiful smile and her gentle ways - and with her stylish, even spectacular, dresses. She was a friend to many, and stalwart of the E building. Lore could be found most days down at the pool exercising always with great vigor and chatting amiably with all who passed by.  We shall all miss her steady presence, and indeed radiance, throughout Sierra Madre.

She is survived by Dr. Walter Raza, wife Annelee, daughters Lee and Marlene of Harlem New York, Romy, husband Eric, and children Colin, Brendan, Rebecca, Emily, and Zachary of Potsdam New York, and Gordon, wife France, children Jesse and Reid.

Rest in peace Lore.

Phil Pankey 1929-2020

The Sierra Madre community was saddened in September by the death of a long-time resident, Phil Pankey at the age of 91.

Phil was a fixture of the community and could often be found under the palapa with a cool beer carrying on an animated conversation with a neighbour. Phil and Sharon's New Year's Day party with chili and Bloody Marys will be remembered by many of us.

Phil was an athlete and involved in many activities in Colorado and Manzanillo including skiing, water skiing, tennis and running.  He completed 5 marathons and was very active, enjoying tennis, water aerobics and walking on the beach into his 90s.

He served in the Navy from 1953 to 1958 and in the Naval Reserve until 1977. In 1982 he was elected as a Representative to the Colorado State Assembly where he served as a staunch Republican until 1998.

His first wife, Ginny, passed away in 1994 and several years later in 2001 he married Sharon Hull. Together they built a home in Grand Lake, Colorado and developed their rooftop condo in Condos Sierra Madre.

He will be greatly missed by all who knew him and loved him.  He is survived by his wife Sharon, his daughter Jill, his son Ralph and granddaughter Tori Ginny.
